VOLUNTEERING THIS COMING Sunday 26th October

24/10/2025

Our last 3 sessions have been on our Elford Heath restoration site where some great progress has been made controlling he regen and stopping the Rhododendron creeping onto the site.
There is lots we can still do there, but it is a challenging site to work and really benefits from larger numbers.
With that in mind, we have decided to switch it up a bit and move back to Cannon Hill this Sunday.
We will be looking at a new area for us, the area that links the recently restored Cannon Hill mire and the "Boggy Middle".
The "Boggy Middle" is another area which should be managed as an open habitat and is a mix of dry heath, wet heath and mire.
A really superb area for bio-diversity and one that was nearly a contender for Peat Partnership funding (it didn't quite meet the criteria).
We are keen to get on top of the regen in this area, which could take us a few years while we also progress our other sites.

No bonfire this time as we want to have a good recce and work out exactly what needs doing and how we are going to go about it.

If you want to be involved in the early stages of this project, cut some Pine and Birch, drink tea and eat sausage sandwiches, then please come and join us!

We will be based on the track just down from Dave's bench.

Not been before, then the following may be helpful -
We aim to get on site at 9am, however we appreciate some people like a lie-in and others like to get home for lunch. You are welcome to come and go as you like, but please check in and out with a task leader.
The end time can depend on the weather and energy levels, but is usually around 2pm-3pm.
Hot drinks and biscuits provided on weekend tasks, and as we move into our Winter works programme, sausage sandwiches for lunch (both plant based and traditional), for those that would like them.
Gloves, tools and training also supplied as always.
If you are under 16, you are very welcome, but please bring an adult along, even if they just watch / drink tea ;-)

Please get in touch if you have any queries.
Please see below for change to November date.
We will also not be holding our usual last Wednesday in the month session next week.

Many thanks,

Andy

VOLUNTEERING THIS COMING WEEK - Saturday 11th October!

Continuing the great work from last month, we will continue cutting Pine, Birch and Rhododendron from the heath.
Weather permitting we will have our first bonfire of the season, so please bear that in mind when deciding what to wear.

Elford Heath is our heathland restoration project which we begun in 2019 returning failed conifer plantation back to the scare lowland heathland habitat it would have been 100 years ago.

Elford Heath is a short walk from the parking areas on Uddens Drive (North of the A31).
Either following the main forest road track or the Castleman trailway where you can join the main track near the solar farm.
We will be based on the main track between the open areas (Elford Heath).

We also have an issue on this month's Wednesday. I am looking at options and may be able to sort out cover, but it would be really handy to know who is planning on coming along, to help me decide.

Local Plan Consultation - Have your say!

21/9/2025

We would urge everyone to have a read of the council's plan for new homes and employment land and make your voice heard (deadline 13th October).

The following areas identified are direct neighbours of Cannon Hill.

LA/COLE/004,017,033 Farmland at Pilford including the field used for events.

LA/COLE/014 Farmland North of the A31

LA/COLE/002 Farmland South of the A31

LA/COLE/006 Farmland South of the A31

We have spoken to two of the land owners who have not been consulted and were understandably upset about the situation.

You can read more and have your say here -

VOLUNTEERING THIS COMING WEEK - Two fabulous opportunities!

09:30 Wednesday 24th & 09:00 Sunday 28th September

With the harvesting operation in full swing in Cannon Hill North, we felt it was prudent to focus on another of our sites for a while.
Elford Heath is our heathland restoration project which we begun in 2019 returning failed conifer plantation back to the scare lowland heathland habitat it would have been 100 years ago.

We will be for both sessions this month and Saturday 11th October at least.

Elford Heath is a short walk from the parking areas on Uddens Drive (North of the A31).
Either following the main forest road track or the Castleman trailway where you can join the main track near the solar farm.
We will be based on the main track between the open areas (Elford Heath).
///promotes.copiers.bandstand
Wednesday's group task will consist of cutting any regenerating Birch, Rhododendron and maybe pulling some bracken on the previously cleared areas.
On Sunday we will be in the same location, finishing anything left from Wednesday and starting to clear a new area.
We will prepare bonfire site for October (October will also be the start of our sausage sandwiches at lunch time ;-).

Not been before, then the following may be helpful -
The times above are when we aim to get on site, however we appreciate some people like a lie-in and others like to get home for lunch. You are welcome to come and go as you like, but please check in and out with a task leader.

Gloves, tools and training also supplied as always.

After the success of last month, we are going to have another session on the dry heath area of the mire in Cannon Hill Mire.
Improving the habitat for reptiles, by pulling more bracken and cutting some of the Birch regen.
There is also some Rhododendron to cut in the adjoining woodland for those that prefer that.

We will be based near the "dog splash platform" on the main track ///exulted.resolved.sensitive

VOLUNTEERING THIS WEEK & NEWS ON FORESTRY WORKS

25/8/2025

Hi All,

Both task days this week will be starting near the Dog Splash in Cannon Hill North.

Please keep reading to see the news about the forestry work taking place and how to keep safe.

Wednesday 27th August with Francis and Paul 9:30 - 14:30 (bring your own refreshments).
After some work around the dog splash, work is likely to move up the hill, so please get in touch with Paul if they have moved on.

Reminder that this coming weekend's task will now be on Saturday 30th August - 09:00 - 14:00 (Drinks and Biscuits provided).

Harvesting Work Starting This Week in Cannon Hill
Just a heads up that routine crop thinning is due to start this week and is planned to last up to 3 months (including the time it takes the timber to be collected from the trackside).
This involves felling selected trees to allow the remainder light and room to grow.
The method will be using a harvester to cut and process the timber, then it will be extracted to the trackside by a forwarder.
Timber lorries will then collect the stacks.
Fortunately the work is being carried out now, pretty much with ideal ground conditions to minimise damage from the heavy machinery.
SAFETY
Please give the operators plenty of space to work. They have quite extensive safety zones (particularly for the harvester).
If you do need to pass close to where they are working, particularly when they are loading or unloading at the trackside, make sure the operator has seen you and indicated it is safe to proceed.
Don't climb on the timber stacks, there are regulations they have to adhere to, but occasionally they have been known to move.
Please keep dogs under close control or on a lead.
Please follow all safety signage and temporary path closures.
As well as keeping everyone safe, by following the above there will be fewer stoppages, resulting in the work being completed faster and tranquility returning to our woods.
It is worth mentioning that brash (trimmings) will be left on the forest floor. This is an important part of getting nutrients into the soil for the remaining trees. Some unofficial "desire" paths may be lost during the work. If there are any that are really missed, following the completion of the work, it may be a task for a volunteer day..... We always welcome new faces 🙂

Hi All,

AUGUST VOLUNTEERING UPDATE
As often seems the case over the Summer, we need to make a few changes to the volunteer task programme, due to availability of team leaders.

Unfortunately we are cancelling this Saturday 9th August.
Wednesday 27th August with Francis and Paul is confirmed as "business as usual".
We have a date change for the end of the month.
The Sunday 31st August task will now be on Saturday 30th August.

Apologies for the inconvenience.
Hopefully you can find other ways of getting out in the countryside and making the most of the sunshine.
We have some great projects coming up in the Autumn 💚🦎

Details of the tasks at the end of the month will follow nearer the time.

Volunteering Sunday 27th June and Wednesday 30th June

24/7/2025

Hi All,

Sunday
After some really great progress on the Balsam, we are going to have what might be the last hit of the season the Sunday....

This time we will start at the entrance to Uddens Plantation near the Police station entrance and spend at least the first couple of hours there, before heading pack upstream to see if we have missed any.
What to wear - We are in amongst the undergrowth (with brambles and nettles possible as well as the distinct possibility of ticks).
The ground is uneven and could be muddy/wet in places.
Definitely suggest long trousers and even long sleeves.  Footwear to suit too.

We will bring along drinks and biscuits, but if staying over lunch, feel free to bring something more substantial.
Gloves available as always, but if you have some lighter weight grippy type gloves, you may want to bring them.

We will go back to a 9am start, but will probably finish earlier than our usual 3pm - come later (and/or finish earlier) if you prefer.
We will finish by 3pm, depending on what we find to pull and when everyone has had enough (particularly if it is very warm).

Parking at Ferndown Forest Golf course (why not grab something to eat or drink at the Forest Inn on the way home.... It is very good!)

Wednesday

Vegetation work on the burial mounds.
Meet at the main mound with the fence at the viewpoint.
Please bring your own refreshments.

Volunteering Opportunity Saturday 12th July

3/7/2025

Sunday we made a good start on the invasive Himalayan Balsam along Uddens Water. It is really easy to pull, although sometimes a little challenging to get to.
It appears to be a little worse than recent years, so we will be carrying on with it Saturday next week (12th July).

To allow people to get to the site without a super early start, we will aim for a 09.30 start (30 mins later than usual), but obviously come later (and/or finish earlier) if you prefer.
We will finish by 3pm, but this will be dependent on what we find to pull and when everyone has had enough (particularly if it is very warm)

It is a little bit of a walk and it is most likely that we will end up closer to the Ferndown golf club end, so choose whether you want a longer walk at the start or end :-)

We will meet at the following location and work around there until we have we have cleared it, before working downstream towards the police station.
Footbridge on trailway near solar farm - If you can't see us, use the radio on the vehicle bonnet with the sign in sheet or call mobile.

Parking on Uddens drive (where the trailway crosses or in the entrance to Uddens Plantation near the A31. Don't block emergency access obvs)
Parking at Ferndown Forest Golf course (why not grab something to eat or drink at the Forest Inn on the way home.... It is very good!)

Any questions, please get in touch, although please note I will not be able to reply until Thursday next week.

Hi All,

Apologies for the late notice, tomorrow's (Wednesday 25th June) session has had to be cancelled due to illness.

However, we will be back to normal on Sunday (29th June), where we will be working along Uddens Water pulling up invasive Himalayan Balsam.
