Volunteering Opportunity this Sunday 4th February - Go on, you know you want to ;-)

Hi Friends,

Our last session worked really well splitting the team between processing the Rhododendron ready for the bonfire and cutting the Birch and Pine regen out on the mire.  Sooo..... We are going to do it again this weekend!

We will base ourselves by the Dog Splash rather than up the top where we had been up until last time.
See below for location details and if using the map below, aim for the Dog Splash rather than the Meeting Point (hope that makes sense, saves me doing another map).

Sausages are on the menu at lunchtime.
Traditional and plant based as standard, but do let us know if you have any other requirements.
To assist with the catering, ideally please let us know if you are coming along before Saturday.
You can email [email protected] or comment on the Facebook post.

For those that have not been before or recently -
We are onsite from 9am - 3pm ish You are welcome to come and go at times convenient to you.
Stay for the whole session or pop along for a couple of hours.
We always have a plentiful supply of hot and cold drinks and biscuits.
Sausages in bread at lunchtime for those that would like it.

Tools, gloves, training and safety brief provided.
We now have a good supply of new bowsaws and loppers courtesy of the Dorset Peat Partnership, so nobody will be left with ropey old tools!

Please dress for the weather, uneven /wet ground conditions and possible spikey vegetation.

LOCATION
We will base ourselves at the bottom of Lizard alley for those in the know, by the dog splash!
You will see the trailer from there.

ADVANCED NOTICE of FORESTRY WORK at CANNON HILL

30/1/2024

Forestry England have asked us to let you know that in the next few weeks a contractor will commence some routine forestry operations  to thin the crop trees in Cannon Hill Plantation - North.

This work was due to be completed a couple of years ago, but was delayed and some of you may remember the work that took place to refurbish the forest road in preparation.
It will involve a harvesting machine working within the conifer crop to remove a percentage of the trees to allow the remainder to flourish. It is not "Clear-felling" the site.
A forwarder machine will then transport the timber out onto the main forest road (track) where it will be collected by a timber lorry.
See pics for an idea of what to expect.

We will share more details closer to the time, with what we can all do to ensure the work goes as safely and smoothly as possible which will keep the disruption to a minimum.

This routine work is not connected to the small scale felling we are carrying out as part of the Dorset Peat Partnership Mire Restoration.

Hi Friends,

The task this week is cutting the Birch and Pine regen out on the mire and on the drier heath along Lizard Alley.
We are in a slightly different location to previous weeks and will be set up at the bottom of Lizard Alley by the Dog Splash rather than up the top as we have been.
See below for location details and if using the map below, aim for the Dog Splash rather than the Meeting Point (hope that makes sense, short of time to update the map).

Sausages (meat and plant based) are on the menu at lunchtime.
Traditional and plant based as standard, but do let us know if you have any other requirements.
To assist with the catering, ideally please let us know if you are coming along before Friday.
You can email [email protected] or comment on the Facebook post.

Hi Friends,
Final details for those coming to help install the dog splash timbers tomorrow.

Hopefully it will only take a couple of hours.
If you have steel toecap / safety footwear, please wear them.
Don't worry if you don't there are still jobs you can do.... a couple of people in wellies would be no bad thing!
Gloves provided, but if you have better grippy type gloves, feel free to bring them.
Please bring your own refreshments as we won't have the welfare trailer.
Not coming tomorrow? The usual Mire restoration project day is going ahead as normal on Sunday, with full catering :-)

Volunteering in January (plus dates for Feb & Mar)

Hi Friends,

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
We are kicking off the year with a focus on two of our ongoing projects.
On Saturday 6th January, we will hopefully be collecting and installing the timber for the dog splash.
Timing to be confirmed, but we will be looking for some "muscle" for a couple of hours in the morning to move it into place and dig out the slots to hold it.
We are really excited to be moving this long overdue project forward.

Sunday 7th January and Saturday 20th January will see us back onto our Dorset Peat Partnership mire restoration project where we have been working since the Autumn.
We have until the end of February to complete our side of the work, to be out the way before their is a risk of disturbing the wildlife on this sensitive site.  The work must be completed this Winter, so the contractor can complete the next stage late Summer.
We have pencilled in our February task days for this project to, on Sunday 4th February and Saturday 17th February.
See below for the details of these task days (they haven't changed!).

Weekdays!
I know we keep promising it, but we really do plan to start doing some.
Although no dates yet, we are planning two before the end of February.
One to continue with the mire restoration at Cannon Hill North and the other just up the road at Whitesheet Hill.
Whitesheet is the other local DPP mire restoration project site and is a great opportunity to be involved in the work (mainly be completed by contractors) on this Site of Special Scientific Interest.
More details to follow.

Tasks and details for our CHN mire restoration volunteer task days -
1. Cutting the Birch and Pine regen out on the mire
2.  Continue cutting the Rhododendron on the drier area
3.  Process (cut up smaller) the Rhododendron and burn on the bonfire

Sausages are on the menu at lunchtime.
Traditional and plant based as standard, but do let us know if you have any other requirements.
To assist with the Sunday catering, ideally please let us know if you are coming along before Saturday.
