October 2019 - Our Launch Volunteer Day - Heathland Project

Picture
An absolutely epic start to our heathland project on Sunday.
18 volunteers, over 60 hours of work and approximately half of our first site cleared.
The sun shone on what has to have been one of our best task days this year.
Before we started we marked with tape the trees we wanted to save for wildlife habitat and food source as well as their aesthetic appeal.
As well as the Scots Pine and Birch, it was great to find a few Larch, Oak, Rowan (Mountain Ash) and Holly.
The ground conditions were even more challenging than expected with just getting around the site a feat in itself.
Even so, everything cut was hauled to the side of the site and burnt or left ready to burn next month.
Heathland needs soil low in nutrients, so it is important to clear as much of the cuttings as possible from the site.
A special mention needs to go to Scott who not only kept the fire going safely throughout, but took our catering to the next level by baking potatoes in the bonfire to compliment our usual sausages.
We will be back on the 3rd November to continue where we left off.
Why not come along, we had ages 8 to 80 today, with everyone able to get involved. - Andy🦎
